Today Pier (UK) Ltd are the leading vacuum excavation hire provider in the UK, and this is how it all started eight years ago.
The business was originally set up back in 2001 to provide drainage services. During this time we hired in a vacuum excavation system to expose buried utilities in a very heavily congested area on a road widening scheme for one of the UK’s largest civil engineering companies. Immediately we could see the benefits of vacuum excavation, so no hesitation was given to placing an order for our first machine.
On 23rd December 2008 Managing Director Sean Quinn took delivery of our first vacuum excavator, and with demand for the specialist equipment soon growing we then started to put a structure in place to sell and support our services. Brian Doran was employed as our sales manager supported by Sean Quinn Managing Director and Majella Hughes our accounts manager. By early 2010 we’d introduced our second and third excavators and have continued to invest year on year ever since.
Acquistion for growth
Over the years Pier (UK) have continued to grow the hire fleet size, and by 2015 we’d become the largest vacuum excavation hire provider in the UK.
February 2016 was probably one of the most interesting months yet, with us making the big step to purchase the assets of, the onetime dealer of our equipment, U-Mole a division of VP Plc.
With this purchase our status then stepped up and raised us to the position of the largest operator in Europe.
We continued with our original planned orders throughout the year prior to the U-Mole purchase and are now proud to say that on 23rd December 2016 we have received our 30th vacuum excavation system.
Not only have we increased the quantity of machines, we have continued to build our infrastructure to support our services. Brian Doran has been promoted from Sales Manager to Sales Director, supported by two Sales Managers. Majella Hughes has been promoted from Accounts Manager to Finance Director, supported by an Accounts Manager and new vacancy for a Credit Controller currently being recruited. Other positions to support our team are a full time Health & Safety Manager, Marketing Manager and a Vehicle and Operator Controller.
“This latest vehicle, number 30 in our fleet, is yet more evidence that contractors and utility providers are putting safety at the forefront of their operations. We will endeavour to continue promoting Vacuum Excavation as better, safer practice”
With this in mind we have orders in place for further Vacuum Excavation Systems in 2017.”
Investing in infrastructure for growth
To be in control of our service and maintenance, we have designed and constructed a purposed built workshop and parts storage bay. The workshop consists of a range of modern machines for the refurbishment of the wear parts, with which we can manufacture and install ourselves. To assist this further we have reconfigured our previous workshop to carry out resprays of the trucks with our own in-house body repair and spray technician.
To enable us to mark eight successful years in Vacuum Excavation we would like to thank all our clients for their support and look forward to working together in 2017.
