Earth Moving Equipment:

Why Vacuum Excavation is Streets Ahead of the RestEarth Moving Equipment - Peir UK (LTD) Fleet

Over the last few years, practising safe excavation has become an essential part of any civil engineering project.

Unfortunately, with our roads and pavements becoming increasingly crowded, choosing the right earth moving equipment to ensure safe utility work, is more challenging than ever.

According to industry experts Clyde and Co, there are up to 60,000 service strikes per year in the UK, with the cost of each one averaging around £7000… now that’s an expensive mistake to make!

With the rise of stringent health and safety site regulations, coupled with substantially increased fines for missed deadlines, more and more contractors are turning their backs on traditional earth moving equipment in favour of a safer, more efficient alternative.

And this is where Vacuum Excavation comes in…

Demand for this safe and practical excavation method has increased hugely over the last few years, and it’s not difficult to see why.

Vacuum Excavation (and also known as Suction Excavation) requires no digging whatsoever, eliminating almost all damage and personal injury risks. A high-powered suction truck is used to quickly, and expertly lift away the ground, with no manual work required, and the truck’s remote control arm offers operators complete control.

Noise and vibrations are also minimised by this suction method, meaning less disruption to local residents and less risk of damages elsewhere on site.

One area where Vac-Ex’s have historically fallen short, is off-road excavation work. Traditional Excavation Trucks were initially designed for working from a hard standing only, meaning contractors were forced to employ the use of ground protection matts and temporary haul roads if they wanted to access more remote areas.

However, this is no longer the case. With the launch of their ground-breaking Tracked Vac System in February 2018, Pier UK (Europe’s largest Vac-Ex provider) changed the game completely. This innovative new system features a tracked under-carriage, making it capable of navigating challenging terrains.

The Tracked Vac system makes an excellent addition to Pier’s existing fleet. Current systems include the largest at 32 ton, down to the 12 ton City Sucker range (for work in busy, congested city centres).

Speaking about Vacuum Excavation’s growing popularity, Pier MD Sean Quinn said:

“As Vacuum Excavation continues to grow, it is our intention to expand our fleet to meet customers’ requirements. We started in 2009 with our first system and we now have over 300 customers registered.

We are really pleased that more contractors are seeing the benefits of this safer, more reliable excavation method .We can’t wait to continue leading the market place in quality and service”.
