Vacuum Excavation Project: Birmingham Excavation

PIER (UK) were excited to take on a Vacuum Excavation project as the method of choice for a number of ongoing projects in Birmingham during November 2018. The work taking place is part of a £10 million re-development in Birmingham City Centre and is due to be completed during the Summer of 2019.

On this occasion, the customer who is a Birmingham based Civil Engineering company required a Vacuum Excavator to uncover a cable that needed to be re-routed. Vacuum Excavation is often the best solution for excavation work in built-up areas, due to its safety and efficient benefits.

A built-up city centre area can be heavily congested with pipes, cables and unknown buried services that may pose a serious safety risk to the on-site workers if they are struck. The high-precision remote-control arm that is fitted on all Vacuum Excavator’s eliminates the need for digging in high-risk areas, which drastically reduces the risk of worker injuries or any costly strikes from the damaged services.

Busy sites with lots of contractors working simultaneously are sometimes subject to strict time constraints which require each element to be completed as quickly as possible. A standard Vacuum Excavator can remove up to 2m3 of spoil per hour and can store up to 10m3 before it needs to be emptied. This makes it far more efficient than the more traditional excavation methods.

Excavation work has historically been messy work which, when taking place in built-up areas such as city centres, carries the risk of complaints from local residents. The Vacuum Excavator’s inbuilt skip is able to store spoil from the site, ready to be put back once the work has been completed. This means that there is far less risk of mess and dirt spreading to the surrounding area.

Sites in built-up areas can often become busy and crowded, particularly with multiple projects and contractors competing for space, therefore it is worth noting that a Vacuum Excavation only requires 2 men; 1 to operate and 1 to oversee. This enables it to be a more efficient option than hiring a team with a digger.

As the industry leaders in Vacuum Excavation, PIER (UK) will listen carefully to their customers’ requirements and provide a solution that is suitable for the Vacuum Excavation project.
