The Problem

Routine roadworks in London required a deep excavation to access underground utility cables beneath the road surface. With buried services in close proximity, the contractors needed a way to excavate safely, minimise the risk of service strikes and maintain control throughout the process.

Reaching the required depth presented an additional challenge, calling for equipment capable of working further down the excavation without compromising safety or precision.

The Solution

PIER (UK) provided a vacuum excavation solution designed to meet the demands of the job.

Using a suction excavator fitted with extended pipework, the team increased the boom’s reach, allowing excavation to continue at greater depths. Remote-controlled operation enabled the boom to be directed from above ground, helping to minimise the need for personnel to enter the excavation during the digging process.

Once the trench had been excavated and shuttering installed to secure the area, Pier’s operators used the machine’s onboard compressed-air lance to carefully remove the remaining spoil around the buried utilities. This allowed the team to work with greater precision when exposing the underground assets.

Why Pier?

Deep excavations around existing utilities require the right combination of equipment, experience and a controlled approach to ground removal.

Pier’s vacuum excavation capabilities allowed the team to adapt its equipment to the depth and conditions of the excavation, combining extended reach, remote operation and precision air excavation to help protect buried services.

Vacuum excavation also collects excavated material directly into the machine’s onboard spoil container, helping to keep the work area tidy and allowing material to be removed for appropriate disposal or recovery.

By matching the right equipment and expertise to the requirements of the job, Pier helped the contractors access deep underground utilities while prioritising safety and precision.
