The Project
Pier UK was brought in to deliver trenching works in Crewe, supporting the installation of new electrical cables for a purpose-built youth zone. The scheme required safe, accurate excavation in a live, busy environment, with existing underground utilities present across the work area.
The objective was straightforward: create clean, compliant trenches ready for cable installation, without disruption, delays, or risk to existing services.
The Problem
On projects like this, traditional excavation methods bring a level of risk that most site managers have dealt with at some point. Unknown or poorly mapped utilities, tight working areas, and the pressure to keep programmes moving all increase the chances of a strike.
A cable hit or service damage doesn’t just slow things down, it can shut a job down completely. You’re looking at safety incidents, unplanned outages, repair costs, and difficult conversations with clients and stakeholders. Even near misses can lead to investigations and lost time on site.
There’s also the issue of precision. Mechanical digging isn’t always suited to working around live services, especially when accuracy is critical. Over-excavation leads to reinstatement costs, while cautious digging can drag programmes out longer than planned.
Our Solution
Pier UK deployed vacuum excavation to carry out the trenching works with a controlled, non-destructive method. By using high-powered suction to remove material, the team was able to safely expose and work around existing utilities without the risk associated with traditional digging.
Each trench was completed with a high level of accuracy, keeping excavation tight to spec and avoiding unnecessary ground disturbance. This not only protected live services but also reduced the need for additional reinstatement.
The team worked efficiently alongside other trades on site, maintaining progress without creating bottlenecks. With a clear understanding of site pressures, the focus was on getting the job done safely, cleanly, and without slowing the wider project down.
