When routine road works in London included creating a deep excavation in order to reach underground service cables, the contractors looked for a way to create a safe excavation to manage the work.

The utility lines were identified deep under the road’s surface and so, the contractors called on PIER (UK)’s expertise to safely excavate the ground whilst also not causing a service strike.

To achieve excavation at such deep depths, the Suction Excavators arm was used with extension pipework to increase the reach of the boom and allowing it to move further down the pit. Ensuring that the majority of the work could be completed from the safety of the above-ground, the use of the remote-control directed the boom and pulled away from the ground by using the machine’s suction power.

Strengthening the Service Excavation Trench

Whilst the ground was safely excavated, the contractors installed shuttering in the trench to secure the area. The PIER (UK) operators could then safely access the excavation to use the on-board air lance to work with precision to remove the final spoil remains from the buried assets by using the compressed air.

Vacuum Excavation is an ideal solution when working in restricted areas as the machine rapidly pulls away from the ground by reducing the amount of dust created during the excavation. The spoil is sucked straight into the machine’s built-in skip where it is collected and tipped out in bulk at the end of the job for re-use or recycling.
